R22 REFRIGERANT PHASED OUT IN A/C UNITS

We were at a home today to inspect and maintain a Rheem A/C unit. The unit is equipped is with an R-22 system. Compressor is showing signs of age by being noisy and knocking. We recommended that unit undergo complete maintenance to obtain a full diagnostic, due to its age and the type of refrigeration. The R-22 refrigerant is being phased out. The homeowner believed someone had flushed out the R22 and replaced it with 410 A. If any company tells you this, you have to know that it is unlikely because your system would not work properly. (Pushing the inspection further, we confirmed the system was indeed only R 22). TECHNICAL EXPLANATION: If you were to put R-410A refrigerant into a system designed for R-22, the pressure would be too much and the unit would break. Also, all air conditioners use oil to keep the compressor lubricated during operation. R-22 air conditioners use mineral oil and R-410A systems use synthetic oil. The synthetic oil is generally more soluble with R-410A than mineral oil is with R-22. Newer air conditioning models are designed to be used with R-410A for reliable and more efficient operation Because R-410A can absorb and release more heat than R-22, your A/C compressor can run cooler, reducing the risk of compressor burnout due to overheating. R22 refrigerant is a HCFC and was discontinued in new AC systems in 2010 due to its contribution to the ozone depletion. Call us to check your A/C unit if it uses R22.
